The fibre is cooked in soda ash, unbleached, and machine-beaten. A very strong and absorbent paper. The technique for making Sekishu washi has been designated by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and by Japan as an Intangible Cultural Property. One of the oldest continuously made papers in Japan, made in the Sekishu area, now called Shimane prefecture. Traditionally used for brush writing, it is also excellent for conservation uses, all forms of printmaking, and dyeing. Nb. colour will lighten slightly with time. Also as known as Sekishu Tsuru.
