City & Guilds Level 3

Springback / Ledger Binding

Dates: tbc 2026  (6 days)

An optional assignment in the C&G Level 3 curriculum.

A ledger or springback binding has a robust structure that was developed in the early nineteenth century for record books which needed to open perfectly flat for clerks to fill in columns using the whole page.  The account book is sewn on heavy webbing, and has cloth-jointed endpapers.  With decorated edges, a calf-lined spine, its laminated flanges are inserted into split boards, and a thick moulded spine creates the springback to throw the pages open.  It is usually covered in reverse calf, goatskin, or vellum in a half binding.  Students wishing to attend this course should have completed the equivalent of C&G Level 2 in Bookbinding.

City & Guilds information

We offer an optional City & Guilds qualification upon request for an additional fee. It is not a prerequisite for participation.

City & Guilds is one of the oldest vocational education organisations in the UK and the only body to offer internationally recognised qualifications in Craft Bookbinding. For over a century professional bookbinders have undergone training based on a City & Guilds curriculum.  Over time the syllabus had adjusted to industry changes and in 2012 Shepherds was instrumental in revising the Craft Bookbinding qualifications to meet modern requirements.
