Leather Case Binding 

The first unit in the Level 2 C&G Level 2 certificate in bookbinding. 

This introductory course into leather will cover the basics of handling leather for bookbinding. Preparing textblocks before learning how to pare the leather to give neat results. Using vegetable tanned leather from Harmatan or Hewits you will learn how to make casebound leather books in quarter and half leather. You will also gain instruction on knife sharpening. 

Please be aware that although this course covers most of the C&G Level 2 Unit 220. Additional backing using a laying press will need to be completed to meet the full unit criteria. 

This course is taught online.  Your chosen kit is sent via DHL to your home address.  

Some bookbinding experience and understanding is necessary.

We must be informed of any cancellations at least two weeks prior to the commencement of the course.  If we are not informed in this time, a £50.00 administration charge will be levied up to 48 hours before the commencement of the course.  After this time no refunds will be given.  Whilst every effort is made to avoid cancellation or postponement of courses, Shepherds Bookbinders Ltd reserve the right to cancel or postpone a course, and will endeavour to give at least 5 working days' notice before the start date.  In these circumstances a full refund will be made, but we cannot be held responsible for any consequential loss.

City & Guilds information

We offer an optional City & Guilds qualification upon request for an additional fee. It is not a prerequisite for participation.

City & Guilds is one of the oldest vocational education organisations in the UK and the only body to offer internationally recognised qualifications in Craft Bookbinding. For over a century professional bookbinders have undergone training based on a City & Guilds curriculum.  Over time the syllabus had adjusted to industry changes and in 2012 Shepherds was instrumental in revising the Craft Bookbinding qualifications to meet modern requirements.

LOCAL ACCOMMODATION

Our Wiltshire courses are held at The Daffodil Barn in Woodborough, near Pewsey. Accommodation is not included in the course fee. The nearest hotels are in Devizes (8 Miles) and Marlborough (9 miles).Both towns are very pleasant places to stay and are an easy drive.  Closer to Woodborough, there are numerous Guest Houses, Country Pubs and Hotels.
