City & Guilds Level 3
Library & Periodical Bindings
Dates: November 10th-12th (Tues-Thurs) (3 days)
This is a mandatory assignment in the C&G Level 3 curriculum.
Library Bindings- When books are likely to be used a great deal, or have a very heavy text-block, a library style binding will ensure greater durability and strength than a standard hardback case binding. During this course you will make a multi-section binding with split boards, hollow spine, cloth-jointed endpapers and reinforced corners: all characteristics of a library style binding.
Periodical Bindings - Binding magazines or periodicals together to create volumes of 3, 6 or 12 months, you will assess the material and either remove staples and sew on tapes as sections, or separating the pages of perfect bound spines to oversew the pages into sections, and sew on tapes. These heavier volumes require a strong cloth jointed endpaper, and a library style binding.
All images of the library binding shown are of students' work completed on a course (with permission).
